Jon began lecturing at the University in 2009, initially as a one to one singing teacher and vocal tutor, but his role has expanded significantly as the department has expanded into one of the largest and liveliest in the UK, focusing on music as an applied art, one that is engaged with the musical world in all its diversity and excitement. Some of his roles are listed below

Lecturer in 1-1 Singing / Voice
  • 30-40 students per year
  • From 1st year to 4th year BMus dissertation or MA
  • Opera, Classical, Musical Theatre, Jazz and Pop
  • Drawing on elements of his studies ranging from traditional Bel Canto to his decade studying with Estil Technique practitioners 
  • Postural alignment drawn from Alexander Technique, Cranio Sacral Therapy & Yoga
  • An emphasis on acting as an integral part of the vocal technique, particularly with reference to the works of Stanislavski
  • Language work invluding French, German, Italian, Russian, Czech, Spanish, Polish & Latin


Conducting & Directing
  • In his work with West Sussex Opera (WSO), Jon has conducted the University orchestral members in a side by side scheme with professional musicians of the WSO orchestra
  • Provided a masterclass on the art of operatic accompanying
  • Trained chorus members for participation in Hansel and Gretel, Il barbiere di Siviglia and Dido & Aeneas
  • Coached soloists in providing cover or small solo roles in productions
  • Trained conductors and repetiteurs
Italian Song Module
  • Beginning in September 2014
  • Using extensive operatic and song repertoire as well as language skills honed in Italy


Opera & Operetta Module
  • Began in 2013
  • A 10 lecture (20 hours) series on the development of Opera into Modern musical theatre
  • Interactive power point presentations
  • Up to 80 students per lecture
  • Subjects including traditional history, the development of the voice, feminism, recitative, dance & a focus on the similarities between the genres
  • Essay marking

Vocal Masterclasses
  • Classes of up to 80 students
  • Focusing on performance presentation

Assessing
  • For singing and piano examinations of all levels
